At age 19 he became interested in classical dance and by the time he reached his twentieth birthday he was dancing principle roles with the Romanian State Opera. While on tour in Italy in 1970 he defected and stayed in a refugee camp for six months. Juliu then received political asylum to the United States and he was headed to New York. After arriving in New York Juliu did what ever was needed to survive from painting houses to dancing on a car in Central Park while auditioning and dancing in civic ballets. Juliu was noticed by someone in the New York City Opera and was hired. He began dancing for their tour company with international stars such as Margot Fonteyn Jacques d' Amboise and Melissa Hayden. Later Juliu danced as a guest artist at Radio City Music Hall for some time and then got a job as principal dancer with the Houston Ballet. While with the Houston Ballet Juliu ruptured his Achilles Tendon and the injury brought his dancing career to a sudden halt. After the injury Juliu started indulging himself in more yoga practice.
Pilates is not just exercise. The very specific movements and breathing patterns require focused attention engaging both body and mind.

While tending immobilized patients he designed exercise apparatus using springs attached to hospital beds. Soon after defecting to the US in the late 1960's Juliu gave up dancing in order to pursue the study of yoga. He soon realized that he could successfully combine the benefits of all these disciplines - swimming gymnastics yoga and dance - into one exercise system in which all the major muscle groups work interdependently and in an integrated manner. Together with this concept he created his first exercise machine a truly innovative and unique piece of work-the Pulley Tower Combination Unit.
Joseph H. Pilates was born in Germany in 1880. As a frail child he was determined to build and strengthen his physique and so developed a lifelong interest in body conditioning. He later went on to become an accomplished diver gymnast and boxer.

Born and raised in Romania [Note to other editors This is correct according to the website: he was born and raised in Romania but is Hungarian] Horvath--who glides with the grace of a cheetah and speaks in heavily accented English--explained during an hour-long interview with IDEA Fitness Journal that the Juliu Horvath Method™ as it once was called was developed after his personal struggle with chronic pain and injury. After dancing principal roles with the Romanian State Opera Ballet in his 20s he defected in 1970 while on tour in Italy and after 6 months in a refugee camp was granted political asylum by the United States. Horvath then moved to New York City was hired by the prestigious New York City Opera and toured with ballet icons Margot Fonteyn and Jacques d’Amboise. Eventually his journey took him to Texas where he became principal dancer with the Houston Ballet but his dance career ended when he ruptured his Achilles tendon and damaged several disks in his back.

Though somewhat light on meditation Ashtanga is fast moving and intense proving to be one of the more physically demanding forms of yoga. The poses are a set sequence of Asanas synchronized with the breath and always performed in the same order. Students move in a quick yet natural flow through a combination of sun salutation poses which include a standing forward bend upward dog downward dog and other poses like standing seated backbends inversions balancing and twisting poses. Debra Rose of San Francisco Gyrotonic has worked with Horvath since the mid 1980s. She says “Certified Gyrotonic trainers have all worked directly with Juliu and his underlying principles are like a rock.” As an example Rose describes how the breath is used in the Gyrotonic exercise system: “There are a number of different ways to use the breath. If you have a slow exercise like the Arch and Curl you do a longer more sustained fuller breath; and if you’re doing a more percussive movement like the Twist and Pull then you use a more percussive breath. The following is a brief roadmap of the steps required to become a licensed Gyrotonic and/or Gyrokinesis trainer. Instruction is offered only by a master trainer or a qualified and authorized pretrainer (pretraining courses only). Juliu Horvath must personally certify all apprentices and students. It can take up to 15 months to complete the program from pretraining to final certification. Though somewhat light on meditation Ashtanga is fast moving and intense proving to be one of the more physically demanding forms of yoga. The poses are a set sequence of Asanas synchronized with the breath and always performed in the same order. Students move in a quick yet natural flow through a combination of sun salutation poses which include a standing forward bend upward dog downward dog and other poses like standing seated backbends inversions balancing and twisting poses. The result is continual movement which can improve stamina strength and flexibility. Ashtanga yoga was the inspiration for Power yoga which though based on the flowing style of Ashtanga typically does not strictly adhere to the set series of poses.
