At age 19 he became interested in classical dance and by the time he reached his twentieth birthday he was dancing principle roles with the Romanian State Opera. While on tour in Italy in 1970 he defected and stayed in a refugee camp for six months. Juliu then received political asylum to the United States and he was headed to New York. After arriving in New York Juliu did what ever was needed to survive from painting houses to dancing on a car in Central Park while auditioning and dancing in civic ballets. Juliu was noticed by someone in the New York City Opera and was hired. He began dancing for their tour company with international stars such as Margot Fonteyn Jacques d' Amboise and Melissa Hayden. Later Juliu danced as a guest artist at Radio City Music Hall for some time and then got a job as principal dancer with the Houston Ballet. While with the Houston Ballet Juliu ruptured his Achilles Tendon and the injury brought his dancing career to a sudden halt. After the injury Juliu started indulging himself in more yoga practice.

In November 2001, Iso Fit became the first Gyrotonic® center in Asia to have the Gyrotonic® Jumping Board available for client training with its unique sliding platform design which works in conjunction with parallel bars enables the exerciser to strengthen and tone the core trunk muscle and extremity and develops a sense of balance and co-ordination.



Juliu continues to run workshops around the world and his work is being recognized as truly unique and innovative.

 

Soon after defecting to the US in the late 1960's, Juliu gave up dancing in order to pursue the study of yoga. He soon realized that he could successfully combine the benefits of all these disciplines - swimming, gymnastics, yoga and dance - into one exercise system in which all the major muscle groups work interdependently and in an integrated manner. Together with this concept he created his first exercise machine, a truly innovative and unique piece of work-the Pulley Tower Combination Unit.

Juliu dreamed of a machine that would help a dancer achieve a better turn or pirouette. This dream and Juliu's creative energy lead him to the development of Gyrotonic Expansion System®, as we know it today. Now people of all ages and all walks of life have benefited from his system.

Developed by Joseph Pilates, this practice focuses on strengthening and stretching the body; resulting in long, lean muscles.

Utilizing his phenomenal intuitive sense of the correct physiological use of the body, Joseph Pilates developed over 500 effective and specific exercises to be performed on his uniquely designed variable resistance spring controlled apparatus-the reformer, the trapeze table, the wonder chair and barrels.

During the First World War, as he was a German citizen, Joseph was interned in England and during that period he worked as a nurse. While tending immobilized patients, he designed exercise apparatus using springs attached to hospital beds. These machines and the exercises that he developed for them were to become the nucleus of his body conditioning method. After the war he moved to New York and opened his first "Contrology" studio there in 1926.

The Gyrotonic® Expansion System works for all people at all levels of the exercise spectrum who wish to gain strength, flexibility and coordination.


Please have this in mind that GYROTONICand Pilates exercise systems are unique and complex in performance. Inappropriate and incorrect exercising may result in injuries. Therefore, our trainer may suggest that you continue with your private or semi-private sessions until you have mastered the exercises and can do them safely on you own.

During this diligent study of yoga he discovered the inner workings of the body and developed a system that he called "Yoga for Dancers", which is a deeper and more advanced level that is now called Gyrokinesis™.

Joseph H. Pilates was born in Germany in 1880. As a frail child he was determined to build and strengthen his physique and so developed a lifelong interest in body conditioning. He later went on to become an accomplished diver, gymnast, and boxer.

Juliu Horvath, a Hungarian, was born and raised in Romania. However, he considers himself to be a "universal being". His father, Juliu Sr. who has passed on, was a tailor and his mother who celebrated her 90th birthday in December 2000 is a housewife.
