Pilates is not just exercise. The very specific movements and breathing patterns require focused attention engaging both body and mind.

Soon after defecting to the US in the late 1960's, Juliu gave up dancing in order to pursue the study of yoga. He soon realized that he could successfully combine the benefits of all these disciplines - swimming, gymnastics, yoga and dance - into one exercise system in which all the major muscle groups work interdependently and in an integrated manner. Together with this concept he created his first exercise machine, a truly innovative and unique piece of work-the Pulley Tower Combination Unit.

Workouts are custom designed to meet each client's goals and no two workouts are the same. Pilates is a life-long process of training your body with an expectation of health and wellness.

Developed by Joseph Pilates, this practice focuses on strengthening and stretching the body; resulting in long, lean muscles.

This exercise system strengthens the "powerhouse"- abdomen, back and buttocks so stabilizing the body and enabling it to move freely. It dramatically and rapidly improves strength, flexibility, posture and overall alignment of the musculature and skeleton without increasing bulk. It is an indispensable tool for athletes and unconditioned people alike enabling them to develop coordination, aesthetic form, strength and balanced posture.

At age 19 he became interested in classical dance and by the time he reached his twentieth birthday he was dancing principle roles with the Romanian State Opera. While on tour in Italy in 1970 he defected and stayed in a refugee camp for six months. Juliu then received political asylum to the United States and he was headed to New York. After arriving in New York Juliu did what ever was needed to survive, from painting houses to dancing on a car in Central Park, while auditioning and dancing in civic ballets. Juliu was noticed by someone in the New York City Opera and was hired. He began dancing for their tour company with international stars such as Margot Fonteyn, Jacques d' Amboise and Melissa Hayden. Later, Juliu danced as a guest artist at Radio City Music Hall for some time and then got a job as principal dancer with the Houston Ballet. While with the Houston Ballet, Juliu ruptured his Achilles Tendon and the injury brought his dancing career to a sudden halt. After the injury Juliu started indulging himself in more yoga practice.

PILATES - A brief history

It is used by straddling the GYROTONER® seat or standing alongside it. The exerciser places a hand on each handle and practices the "arch and curl." Movements work the spine's ability to move and twist as required in daily life, open up the intercostals [the short muscles between the ribs] and tighten the oblique abdominals. Another move, a figure eight, requires more coordination. Placing two hands on one wheel handle, the exerciser stirs the wheel around and around stretching the spine and challenging the body to move in wider and wider circles. Other exercises challenge the lower extremities, arms and shoulders. Sports specific training (including swimming, tennis and golf) as well as gentle therapy, are very much part of the repertoire.

During the First World War, as he was a German citizen, Joseph was interned in England and during that period he worked as a nurse. While tending immobilized patients, he designed exercise apparatus using springs attached to hospital beds.
